In Egyptian mythology, Bastet (from the Egyptian Bast) is the Egyptian goddess of the joy of the home, the warmth of the sun, motherhood, and also the protective goddess of pregnant women and children. She can take the form of a cat or a warrior lioness. Bastet is both gentle and wild. She is a goddess with feline features.
Daughter of the sun god Re, Bastet is however sometimes considered the daughter of Amon. She is a two-faced goddess: in her form as a cat or cat-headed goddess, she is the benevolent goddess protector of humanity, also the musician goddess of joy and the goddess of childbirth. On the other hand, in the guise of a goddess with the head of a lioness, she then identifies with the formidable goddess of war, Sekhmet.
